History

There's a value, a celebrity, in creation that's greater and truer than my pride or my ego. Call it grace! Call information technology being! Whatever it is, it didn't come from My hands. It was in that location waiting to be born! It just is! As yous and I only were! Since you've been freed, I know that you've seen information technology... Felt it.

– Chuck to Amara, 11.22 We Happy Few

In the get-go in that location was God and the Darkness. They were previously one harmonious cosmic entity which split autonomously into two cosmic forces balancing light and darkness. Equally a result, it created the Big Bang and brought existence into being.

God began to create worlds and beings to satisfy Himself and His sister, to show her there can be more than to being than just the 2 of them. But for every world He would create, the Darkness would destroy it. Knowing that destroying the Darkness would cause a fatal disruption in the Cosmic Residuum, God would eventually go on to create the archangels, and battle her until they finally managed to pull a fast one on her and lock her away. He entrusted the lock and key — a special Mark — to His most favored son, Lucifer.

With His sis locked abroad, God, as Metatron put it, "got downwards to unfettered creation." He would keep to create the outset beasts, the Leviathans. All the same, God became concerned at their destructiveness, and locked them abroad in Purgatory. Soon after He created the angels and their classes, creating the Host of Sky. Hellhounds were created at some betoken to be "Creator's all-time friend," every bit Crowley put it, however their viciousness proved to be likewise much for God, which led to Him having them all destroyed, except for one, Ramsey, who was rescued by Lucifer. Before long afterwards, God would create the soul, and would go on to gift information technology to humanity, dubbing them His most cute and loved creations.

Free to create, God would as well go on to brand alternate universes, just in club to do then to ensure His original universe would thrive in His absence, God was forced to write Himself into the fabric of that reality. Capable of creating infinite new universe, when He became dissatisfied with a world, He moved onto another universe to start again.[1] In the universe of the Winchesters, He would take a specific interest in Sam and Dean, claiming that out of all the Sams and Deans in all the multiverse, they were His "favorite show." God ordered all of His angels to bow earlier humanity and love them more than Him, but Match refused to bow down equally the other angels did. The Mark eventually began asserting its own will, becoming the first curse, corrupting Lucifer and enhancing his jealousy of man, causing his autumn from grace. On God's control Lucifer was cast out of Heaven by Michael and imprisoned in the Cage, simply not earlier Lucifer created the commencement demons and passed the Mark to Cain.

According to the goddess Fortuna, when humans offset gained sentience, they worshiped nature effectually them rather than recognize God's "beneficence". As an human action of spite against His creations, He created the heathen gods as scapegoats to take the blame whenever things went wrong for the humans. But when humanity began making epic stories about them, His ego could only take so much before making His presence known. God would take to hiding backside whatever religion was the most popular at the fourth dimension and leaving these gods to wander the world taking whatever scraps they could notice until they became forgotten or killed past humans. Over time, most of these gods take forgotten their true origins, many of them believing themselves to exist superior compared to other gods in opposing religions.[2] [iii]

Only the archangels had always seen God, until God revealed Himself to Metatron to write down His Word. The affections Joshua was the just known angel to take had conversations with Him prior to God revealing Himself as Chuck Shurley to Metatron and the Winchesters. Even afterward revealing Himself, God still preferred to exist called "Chuck" as beingness chosen "God" and treated with praise makes Him "deeply uncomfortable." At some indicate, out of sheer disappointment in His creations, God left Heaven and Michael assumed command of the angels, and running Heaven and Earth for millennia. Both Uriel and Raphael lost faith in their maker, stating that God must exist expressionless,[4] [5] although most angels believed that He still existed.

Chuck tells the Winchesters that He only interferes directly when things get apocalyptic on Globe, to the point where the main threat rivals His power. He offers His assist to the Winchesters every bit the prophet "Chuck Shurley" to foreclose the Apocalypse from coming to pass, every bit well as to have a front end row seat to the Apocalypse. Later, as the Darkness threatened to destroy the universe, realizing He could not defeat her on His ain, He initially planned to cede Himself to be locked away, until Metatron convinced Him to help the Winchesters terminate His sister. Notwithstanding, Amara managed to mortally wound Chuck, causing a disruption in the Cosmic Residue.[6] When Dean managed to convince the ii siblings to reconcile, Amara heals Chuck and the two leave together.[7]

Chuck and Amara'south reconciliation was brusque-lived, nevertheless, as the two soon agreed to take some time apart due to Amara having grown tired of her brother's failure to modify. God reappears subsequently Castiel prays to Him to help them control Jack after he loses his soul and is unable to control his destructive powers. When He fails to get Dean to impale Jack, Chuck kills His grandson with a snap of His fingers, just is shot by Sam with the Equalizer, diminishing His strength, connecting Him to Sam, and temporarily trapping Him in Sam and Dean's universe. In retaliation, God unleashes all of the souls of Hell upon the world, proclaiming "Welcome to The Stop."[viii] [9]

Despite the Winchesters and Castiel managing to seal Hell again,[10] God was undeterred and began plotting their demise, intending to make one blood brother kill the other.[11] God resurrected Lilith to have her destroy the Equalizer for Him[12] and manipulated Sam to resurrect Eileen Leahy so that He could apply her to keep an heart on the Winchesters.[13] [14] When they seek the assistance of Michael, who was released from the Cage, God lures Sam into a trap where He reveals the future where Sam and Dean succeeded in trapping Him. Believing God, Sam foils the endeavor to trap Him, enabling God to heal His wound and leave the Earth, though information technology was believed that He would return eventually.[fourteen]

God is eventually stripped of His powers by Jack who becomes the new God, leaving Chuck powerless and mortal to live out a human life and die forgotten.[15]

Characteristics

Chuck after merging with Amara.

As one of the two primeval known beings in cosmos, along with His sister the Darkness, God is an nigh-omniscient and nigh-almighty being capable of feats such as healing, resurrection, teleportation... damn near anything. His just known weaknesses are His sister the Darkness, who is the only existence in existence with the capability to mortally wound God. If God were to die, then at that place would be a shift in the Catholic Balance which would lead to the finish of all beingness. It is also known that with stiff enough warding, it is possible to hide oneself from fifty-fifty God, every bit evidenced by His and Amara's use of wards to stay hidden from each other; every bit well as Chuck being unable to sense a nearly-human Gabriel who was using a potent cloaking spell made by the shaman Sergei, while he was hiding in Monte Carlo and being held prisoner by Asmodeus. If God is significantly weakened, what was washed to the Darkness to lock her away could also be done to Chuck. According to Ketch, even everything that the British Men of Messages had on God was purely theoretical, with zero definite regarding a weapon or spell that can potentially injure or kill Him.

Metatron had described his memoirs equally "angry with a side of biting," and while writing His memoirs, Chuck would show His more wrathful side to Metatron. Both Amara and Lucifer depict Him every bit egotistic.

Former Powers and abilities

  • Apporting – With a elementary snap of His fingers, God was capable of teleporting anyone or anything to a destination of His choosing, as evidenced when He saved Sam and Dean from Lucifer'southward release by teleporting them onto a plane.
  • Cleansing – God was able to cleanse Sam of his demon claret addiction, as well as the town of Hope Springs, Idaho, of a rabid infection.
  • Creation – When the Darkness was locked away, God was able to create multiple universes equally well as the diverse realms such as Sky, Hell, and Purgatory.
  • Healing – God possessed the ability to heal any type of injury.
  • Mind command – Prophets typically speak the discussion of God indirectly, but in certain cases God was capable of completely taking over a prophet's mind and using them directly equally a mouthpiece.
  • Well-nigh-omniscience – As creator of the known universe (and multiverse), God was all-knowing and can meet and hear all things in existence. His omniscience also allows God to "requite" Himself any abilities He and so wishes, such as how to play guitar or speak French.
  • Near-omnipotence – God was one of the well-nigh powerful beings in beingness, second only to His sister the Darkness.
  • Power negation – God was able to render Match powerless in the presence of Sam and Dean as a safeguard to prevent him from hurting the Winchesters.
  • Power transference – Certain objects that God has come up into contact with tin become imbued with His ability. These items are known as a Hand of God, and are highly destructive, so powerful that if a human were to come into contact with one they would be annihilated by its power.
  • Prayer – God, like the angels, was capable of hearing all the prayers in the world. He rarely, if ever, answered them.
  • Precognition – As an omniscient being, God could see into the future to a far greater degree than that of the archangels, allowing Him to masquerade convincingly as a prophet. He was aware that Friction match would possess Sam and that this decision would lead to his downfall, something that Match himself couldn't foresee. God was too able to foresee what would become the future if the Winchesters and Castiel succeeded in locking Him away, and was able to utilise a special pocket scout to show Sam a vision of this future. God chosen this "extending My omniscience" to Sam.[14]
  • Protective aura – God could cast an aureola of protection on Sam and Dean to prevent them from being harmed while they recruit their allies and adversaries to boxing Amara. This aura could be detected past witches.
  • Pathokinesis – As seen with Jack and Dean, Chuck was capable of stimulating certain unwanted feelings in people to coax them into doing what He wants for His story and making it seem like those actions are their own. Chuck used this to have Jack kill Mary and fuel Dean's rage to coax him into killing Jack and Sam as part of His story. Dean said information technology was like smelling "claret in the water" and that he "couldn't snap out of it."[xvi] [17]
  • Resurrection – God could bring anyone or anything back to life. Having "rebuilt" Castiel "more times than [He] can remember." However, archangels, beingness "the stuff of primordial creation" take more time and effort. Despite the Cosmic Entity stating that God has no ability over the Empty, He was able to resurrect the demon Lilith even while in a weakened state.[12] God was eventually able to resurrect Lucifer in an effort to get Chuck's Death Volume despite His previous claim of of how difficult resurrecting an archangel is. However, God accomplished this feat after arresting the Darkness and her power.[fifteen]
  • Souls – While God created the soul, Chuck said that He was unable to restore Jack's soul, as souls are "complicated", even for Him. Withal, the veracity of His claim could neither be confirmed nor denied.[8]
  • Smiting – With a snap of His fingers, God could smite anything, including a Nephilim like Jack.
  • Warding – While acting as the prophet Chuck Shurley, God was able to muffle Himself from the angels, preventing Dean's Amulet from glowing white hot in His presence. This warding ability extended to God being able to conceal His location from even His sister, Amara.
  • Telekinesis – When angered, God showed the ability to throw Metatron clear across a room with no physical gestures.
  • Telepathy – God was capable of reading minds, having used this ability to write the Supernatural books, which transcribed the inner thoughts likewise every bit actions of Sam and Dean Winchester.
  • Teleportation – God was capable of teleporting Himself anywhere in existence.

Weaknesses

While God is one of the most powerful beings in beingness, He is non invulnerable. The original Death stated to Dean Winchester that ane day God volition die, and he will reap Him also.

  • Binding spell – Michael revealed that what God and the archangels did to the Darkness could besides be done to Chuck. The spell requires myrrh, cassia, rock rose, and the nectar of a Leviathan Bloom, which grows exclusively in Purgatory. This spell required someone to bear a similar mark to the Mark of Cain and can only exist reversed if the mark is destroyed. In an alternate possible futurity shown to Sam by God, the Winchesters and Castiel managed to succeed in locking God away using the spell.
  • The Darkness – As God'due south equal, Amara is the just known being capable of mortally wounding God. However, with His death comes an imbalance in the Cosmic Balance, tipping the scales to the Darkness, which can have catastrophic ramifications and render the universe into pettiness.
  • The Equalizer – It is unknown if this gun is truly capable of killing God. However, the gun being used on Chuck did weaken and diminish His powers, finer stranding Him on Earth. Being shot created a bullet hole in His shoulder which caused Him pain, as well as a connectedness to Sam Winchester due to the weapon using a moving ridge of multidimensional free energy beyond a counterbalanced quantum link betwixt the target and the shooter. After Sam gave upwards hope of beating God, which Chuck described as "festering" in Sam's end of the link, God was able to heal both of their wounds and regain His full power.
  • Free volition – Certain beings with a strong plenty volition can resist the urge to requite in to any emotions stimulated past God. Despite Chuck's best efforts, Dean managed to regain command of his emotions and avoided killing Jack and Sam.[viii] [17] With free will, Chuck's omniscience / foresight tin as well be hindered, as He had told Sam with the "right scroll of the dice" Dean and Castiel could have succeeded in imprisoning Him.
  • Jack Kline – As the half-human son of Lucifer, Jack is immensely powerful, to the point that God was worried when he was loose upon the earth and soulless. On the other hand, God was able to kill Jack effortlessly when He decided to exercise so.[viii] Jack was resurrected by Billie, and claimed that he could go powerful enough to kill God if he follows the programme laid out for him by her.[3] Afterwards becoming a power vacuum, Jack is able to strip God of His powers, leaving God mortal, powerless, and human.[15]
  • Warding – With powerful enough warding and spells, a being can hide their presence from God.

Later on beingness transported to BG's Canteen, Metatron quickly realizes that the bar is a construct created by God. When he finds Chuck Shurley sitting at a booth, he believes he is existence punished by God by having to spend eternity in a "crappy bar with a hack author," and gain to become in on Chuck's writing. Chuck eventually reveals to Metatron that He is, in fact, God. As Metatron begins groveling on his knees, Chuck tells him to cease every bit the kneeling and being chosen "God" make Him uncomfortable, telling Metatron to call Him Chuck. After Chuck pours a glass of whiskey for Metatron, Metatron asks Chuck what He has been upwards to. Chuck reveals that He started a blog nigh cats, signed upwardly for Snapchat, started a new series of books titled Revolution (though He doesn't recall they will go anywhere) as well as having traveled and dated a few people. He besides explains how He was able to deactivate Dean's amulet so they wouldn't suspect Him of being God during the Apocalypse, and He reactivates information technology before putting it away. Chuck reveals that He wanted to finish His autobiography and needs Metatron's assistance to do it, which he accepts. Later reading it, Metatron points out that it's missing a few things such as details and balance. He tells him to write for an audience of one and reveal who He really is.

Chuck explains that nature was the closest thing that was as good as or better than Himself or His sister, since it knows that it's sometimes meliorate to outset from scratch. Metatron discovers that Chuck was going to let Amara destroy the universe, and tells Him off about how he was never a coward when he tried to play God. Chuck reveals that He is done watching humanity's failures and wants to permit Amara win. As Chuck begins to terminate the last few pages of His autobiography, Metatron tells Him that He is incorrect about humanity because He knows that they are better than He is and understands what they are capable of in both positive and negative ways. Chuck, touched and conspicuously guilty Himself for losing faith in humanity, decides to help Sam and Dean deal with the Darkness after finishing His volume. He reverses the effects of the rabid infection in Hope Springs, Idaho. He fifty-fifty sends Dean's amulet into Sam's jacket pocket to allow them to notice Him.

11.21 All in the Family

"I know y'all had a complicated upbringing, Dean. But don't misfile me with your dad."

Chuck teleports Sam and Dean back into the Men of Letters Bunker forth with Himself to bear witness to them that He actually is God and even confirms it with the assist of Kevin Tran. Afterwards sending Kevin's soul to Heaven, Sam talks about how he was praying to Him, but was unaware if He was actually listening. Dean tells Him near how humanity had been suffering for thousands of years while God did nothing. Chuck tells him that He has been helping them for ages and decided that in social club to allow humanity to thrive, that He needed to take a step back and let them find their way. He also believes that despite everything, things have gotten better from His point of view.

God tells them that the but reason He came to help them was because the Darkness was a force across human comprehension, and He tells them nigh how atrocious it was to always practise what Amara wanted. When Sam tells Him that they might need Lucifer'due south help, God tells them that He doesn't trust him since he could accept formed an brotherhood with Amara. Lucifer tells God off about how He all the same wouldn't repent to Him before leaving and taking refuge in Sam'southward bedroom. Chuck afterwards tells Sam and Dean that He tin't repent about imprisoning Lucifer since He doesn't feel pitiful because He did it for humanity, but they remind Him that the finish is approaching and they demand to talk.

God decides to talk to Lucifer and He tells him that He did what He had to do since the Marking corrupted him and fabricated him into a threat to humanity. Lucifer berates Him almost how He betrayed him and threw him away after the Mark changed him. Sam agrees with Match since all he wants is an apology and God is too concerned about existence right to practise so. Frustrated, Chuck teleports Sam and Dean to the crow's nest in the Bunker to continue their word in individual. God tells Friction match that the reason He gave him the Mark was considering he was His favorite and He thought he was potent enough to conduct it, but He punished him out of guilt after He saw what the Marker did to him. After finally apologizing, Lucifer forgives Him and they decide to focus on more important matters: the Darkness. God and Match tell Sam and Dean about the Catholic Balance being one of the reasons that Amara was imprisoned rather than destroyed. He tells them that they would need the rest of the archangels to accept a shot against her. God tells them that Michael is in no status to fight, and since archangels are the stuff of primordial creation, it would take time that they don't take to bring Gabriel and Raphael dorsum, fifty-fifty for Him.

Sam and Dean decide to bring angels, demons, and witches into the fight to make upwards for the missing archangels. God meets them in an abased power plant and tell them to strike against Amara when she arrives. Shock and awe. Sam reveals that he and God talked about imprisoning Amara once again by restoring the Mark of Cain onto Sam's arm since Dean can't comport information technology anymore due to already being tainted past its power. Subsequently she had to suffer an set on by Rowena and the rest of the witches, the angels with their angel smiting, and Crowley and his demon horde, she barges in where she lays optics on her blood brother for the showtime time in eons. Equally she approaches Him, Lucifer stabs her with his spear and tries to finish her off, but God convinces him to back downwardly. Chuck apologies to her for everything, only Amara doesn't want to hear it and tells Him that the real reason He banished her was considering He couldn't stand property in His ego. Chuck tells her that there is a value in creation that is greater than His ego and that the materials for creation were at that place waiting to be born. Chuck apologizes over again before commencement the transference of the Mark from Amara's shoulder to Sam'south arm, but Amara interrupts Him before the transfer could be completed and rips Lucifer out of Castiel before He could finish her. She tells God that she would rather dice before going back to her prison before striking Him with tendrils of blackness smoke, terminally weakening Him and causing a disruption in the Catholic Balance. She tells them that God will fade abroad into cypher, but not before He watches all of creation plow to ash.

11.23 Alpha and Omega

"Globe will be fine. Information technology'due south got you lot... and Sam."

Afterward leaving the power plant, they discover that the sun is dying because God is dying. God, weakened by Amara's set on, tells them that she is the only i who can save Him and that the disruption in the Cosmic Balance volition destroy everything. He teleports everyone dorsum to the Bunker where everyone well-nigh seems to have given up, though God appears to be forming a bond with Rowena, discussing parenthood. Sam berates everyone nearly doing nothing while the universe slowly dies and decides that since they can no longer imprison her, they accept to kill her. God reveals that the Darkness has ane weakness; calorie-free. The corporeality of light it would accept to destroy her would be 10,000 supernovas in one strike. Castiel tells them that the energy in souls is equal to 100 suns. Rowena believes that with plenty souls, she can build a flop that should destroy her. Sam and Dean head over to Waverly Hills Sanitarium to collect the souls of vengeful spirits, but they are followed back to the Bunker by Billie. She decides to help them get all the souls they need by raiding the Veil. After collecting a few hundred chiliad souls into a crystal, Rowena channels that free energy into Dean since he is the only one with a personal connectedness to Amara to get close plenty to her. They all visit Mary's grave in Greensville, Illinois, before sending Dean to Amara, who is located in a park watching the sun dice. God tells them that despite everything, Amara is still His sister. After saying adieu to everyone, God sends Dean to Amara.

God and everyone else look in a bar called "The Lazy Shag" for Dean to end off the Darkness. Dean tells her about how God doesn't want her dead and that despite everything, she needs her brother, just like he needs Sam. Dean tells her to put bated her hatred for Him and ask herself what she really wants. She summons God when Sam went to get Him h2o and tells Him about how she hated Him for wanting something else that wasn't her. She finally realizes that what God made is beautiful and tells Him that she wants them to be a family again. Chuck Is God

Following the season five finale, there was much debate amongst fans to whether Chuck was in fact God, and whether he had been and so all along. While consensus was with Chuck every bit the Divine beingness - many fans started substituting Chuck's proper noun for God's in expressions such equally "Chuck be praised?" "Oh My Chuck - OMC" and "Thank Chuck" - not all agreed. Writer and Producer Sera Gamble on the God debate refused to either confirm or deny the speculation: "Don't ask me to squish the God debate! How many TV shows can say their fans are talking most THAT stuff?"

Chuck as a writer is the creator of the story of Sam and Dean Winchester in the grade of the Supernatural books. He says when confronted with the real Sam and Dean that he "is a god," for all that he puts them through in the books happens in real life. This is explained by Castiel as Chuck being a prophet of God. Castiel says the Supernatural books volition go known as the Winchester Gospels.

The metaphor in this episode is of the writer equally creator. Chuck's pseudonym is Carver Edlund, a reference to Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund. The character is an avatar for Eric Kripke himself (Source) and is used to comment on the text and process of writing with reference to specific by episodes of the show. This metaphor would too hold then is God, the creator, was besides the author. Nosotros have a trinity hither -- Chuck Shurley, Eric Kripke and God.

Sam and Dean find out from the affections Joshua that God is on Earth.[nineteen]

In 5.01 Sympathy for the Devil, Chuck says that he can feel the angels' presence in his house, which is not a power of the prophet and may be due to his being God.

In the finale there is farther foreshadowing of Chuck'due south possible identity: When Dean calls Chuck, Chuck answers the phone "Mistress Magda," and we briefly see a newspaper advertisement for a blonde women in a bikini named "Miss Magda" on Chuck'south desk before he puts his drinking glass on it. This may be a reference to Mary Magdalene who Jesus, the physical incarnation of God, healed of demons. She and then become a follower of his, and an early Christian leader. Chuck, later on narrating the events that take place, finally appears dressed in white musing on the difficulty of getting endings correct. He and so disappears - Chuck, it seems, is God.

Fans arguing against Chuck'south divinity indicate primarily to the fact that Dean'south amulet, which Castiel says volition "burn hot" in God'south presence does non react when Dean and Chuck see face to face in iv.18 The Monster at the Stop of This Book, 4.22 Friction match Rising, and 5.01 Sympathy for the Devil. All the same, Joshua tells Sam and Dean in Sky "Magic amulet or not, you won't be able to find Him."

Other arguments included the failure of others to recognize God's true self, including Raphael, the archangel assigned to protect Chuck. In 5.03 Complimentary to Be Yous and Me, he tells Dean and Castiel that God is "dead" and they are living in a "godless universe." Castiel is also ignorant of Chuck'southward truthful identity. He held off Raphael at Chuck's house while Dean went after Sam in 4.22 Lucifer Rising, and met Chuck several times. Another argument that supports Chuck being God is, the angels (Castiel and others) have said that there can but be i prophet at a unmarried time. The only time one person can no longer be a prophet is if they die. If Kevin becomes a prophet, and then Chuck must be expressionless. Although in "Fan Fiction", he pops up and is live. Now how tin can a prophet be alive if there was a prophet (Kevin) after him. The only explanation is that Chuck is in fact God.

In episode 10.05 Fan Fiction Chuck appears at the end of the episode, once again raising the question whether or non he is God.

In 11.20 Don't Phone call Me Shurley, Chuck returns and reveals to Metatron that He actually is God.
